From Jed, Amara and Satchi to Dorothy & Franklin:

We have been wondering how/what to say and today this email arrived that is more eloquent than either of us could be. It reminds us that we want to send you our love and let you know that we are holding both of you in our hearts... Godspeed.

A farewell from a literary giant:

Gabriel Garcia Marquez has retired from public life because of health reasons: cancer of the lymph nodes. It seems that it is getting worse. He has sent this farewell letter to his friends, which has been translated and posted on the Internet. This is possibly, sadly, one of the last gifts to humanity from a true master.
________________________________________________________

If for an instant God were to forget that I am a rag doll and gifted me with a piece of life, possibly I wouldn't say all that I think, but rather I would think of all that I say.

I would value things, not for their worth but for what they mean.

I would sleep little, dream more, understanding that for each minute we close our eyes we lose sixty seconds of light.

I would walk when others hold back, I would wake when others sleep.

I would listen when others talk, and how I would enjoy a good chocolate ice cream!

If God were to give me a piece of life, I would dress simply, throw myself face first into the sun, baring not only my body but also my soul.

My God, if I had a heart, I would write my hate on ice, and wait for the sun to show. Over the stars I would paint with a Van Gogh dream a Benedetti poem, and a Serrat song would be the serenade I'd offer to the moon. With my tears I would water roses, to feel the pain of their thorns, and the red kiss of their petals . . .

My God, if I had a piece of life . . . I wouldn't let a single day pass without telling the people I love that I love them. I would convince each woman and each man that they are my favorites, and I would live in love with love.

I would show men how very wrong they are to think that they cease to be in love when they grow old, not knowing that they grow old when they cease to be in love!

To a child I shall give wings, but I shall let him learn to fly on his own.

I would teach the old that death does not come with old age, but with forgetting.

So much have I learned from you, oh men . . .

I have learned that everyone wants to live on the peak of the mountain, without knowing that real happiness is in how it is scaled.

I have learned that when a newborn child squeezes for the first time with his tiny fist his father's finger, he has him trapped forever.

I have learned that a man has the right to look down on another only when he has to help the other get to his feet.

From you I have learned so many things, but in truth they won't be of much use, for when I take them within this suitcase, unhappily I shall be dying.

From the McIntyres (Dorothy and Mac):

We just received your e-mail this morning. Thank you all so very much for letting us know of your needs. Your entire family will be in our prayers constantly because I suppose of the men whom we have known in our long lives, Franklin ranks up there in the top two or three. Admiration, respect, and a role model for everyone he has known in his life. We know how important his family has been to him and we are so happy that you are all able to be with him to share these difficult days.

A Navajo prayer:

Happily may I walk.
May it be beautiful before me.
May it be beautiful behind me.
May it be beautiful below me.
May it be beautiful above me.
May it be beautiful all around me.
In beauty it is finished.

Memories from Bob and Lib Christie:

Lib: When you had the [boat] hanger in Erie and you were kind enough to take us for the first time. We took the plastic cover off and disconnected most of the other connections (hose electric etc.), and Lib started to say disconnect the telephone, when the captain said ôSit down.ö We backed out, pulling the telephone wires with us! I had put up the mast when the captain decided to go back into the hanger. We broke part of the mast. Captain said "AGAIN?!"

Bob: The trip from Buffalo on one and a half engines. All the trips to Dover! We enjoyed more trips on Keyco than any family I know who could not buy a boat of their own!

January 28, 2001 by Danica in Danica Miller

The following are messages to Franklin from Lew and Ellie Davies and Dave Bainer(who is visiting him this weekend):

Lew: I'll never forget those get-away flights in the Beechcraft Bonanza with Stan and you and me. Remember the time when we thought we were going to Las Vegas but when you filed the flight plan Stan said "Where in hell are we going?" You calmly reported "New Orleans - the weather is bad in Las Vegas". Upon arriving, we found the National Brewers Convention had filled all the rooms. At the hotel, bypassing the long lines at the desk and being the suave Treasurer of our group, I greased the palm of the reservation clerk with a ten-spot (it would take fifty today!) and, oh, yes, Mr. Davies, right this way for your room. And how we did save money in that bar where the price of drinks was right!! Those were the days, old friend.........

Dave: I've never forgotten that you were the one who taught me how to sail . It has been of lasting enjoyment ever since on the waters of Rhode Island. I remember especially the day we raced in the morning at Pymatuning and then "stepped the mast", trailed the boat back to Conneaut Lake and raced again in the afternoon. Great memories!

Ellie: I remember taking little David to picnics at your cottage at the lake; the shower you and Dorothy and the Conovers gave for Lew and me with "Everything But the Kitchen Sink" when everyone got loaded on the pre-chilled Martinis (Lew says they were Manhattans); and all those gala tureens. Best of all was when you invited Howard 'n Alice to join us on your boat and it was a high point in their lives. You have always been great about "sharing your toys". Love you.

January 28, 2001 by Danica in Danica Miller

Several people have started sending messages for us to share with Dad. This came from the Unitarian minister in Meadville, Kate Walker. Although more general in content, it was so warm and encouraging that I thought it would be good to share with everyone:

I suspect your experiences will continue to challenge you in ways you never thought possible. If anyone had told you ahead of time what you would be going through, you may have thought you wouldn't be able to do it. In other words, you are probably discovering you have more internal resources than you thought you did. This is a good time to reflect upon memories and the love your family has shared, I hope your reflections come with warmth and hope for the future. Be sure and allow yourself a lot of latitude for unusual behavior. For example, the first thing I did when my father died was paint my nails, not something I do very often! But it was self care.

January 28, 2001 by Danica in Danica Miller

One of the best ways for me to process events and emotions is by taking photographs. I asked my family if they minded if I took pictures of them during our time together here in Florida. The image below was the first picture I took of Dad once I got the OK. I am using a new Advantix camera. Not being used to it I pulled the film in and out incorrectly while taking pictures during our visit to Florida at Christmas. When I ran the same roll through again this week, I ended up with a double exposed roll. Fortunately there were several happy accidents, this image being one. ItÆs interesting to me that both my son Ben and my Dad were more than willing to look me directly in the eye.

January 27, 2001 by Adam in Family

We went to visit Seraph, Robbie, and Isabell today. She's quite the healthy baby, very active and constantly eating. For the most part, she seems to be doing well. She sleeps pretty good, though a couple nights ago she cried for an hour or so. That's not bad in my book, as I fondly remember the complete lack of sleep after Sam was born. Ah, the good ol' days.

We are getting better at our nursing routines

January 27, 2001 by Danica in Danica Miller

We are getting better at our nursing routines. Dad is usually up in the morning around 9 or so. We get him into a wheel chair [he hates lying in bed all the time!] and he either has some breakfast looking out on the back yard, or at the table with us. Then the nurse's aide arrives to bathe and do basic grooming. Yesterday he stayed up for a while after that, but often he goes back to sleep.

Then he's up again in the afternoon. Yesterday he decided to watch Oprah! Some evenings we watch TV. On Wed. we viewed a video I made last week of Ben's most recent jazz band concert (where he starred on the piano) Everyone's toes were tapping! Plans are already in place for a modest Super Bowl "party". As the NY representative, I'm ready to keep things rowdy by rooting for the Giants!

Our main concern is managing the pain. We switched medications yesterday and for now it seems we have mastered that hurdle. When I got up this morning at 6:30 the note left by Lohring and Yayoe from 12:30am said "no pain reported". Hopefully we will be able to maintain that as status quo.

Thanks again to everyone for love, healing thoughts and support. We are most grateful!

From Polly Cosyns 1/27/01

On another note, tell Franklin that of all of our excursions together (on boats, namely) I remember most an airplane ride from Ft. Myers to Meadville in winter-time (possibly January) when most of the trip was in heavy clouds, and I thought that there was no need to worry because Franklin was the pilot. When we landed in Meadville there was ice on the runway, and it was a slippery walk to the hangar. (My Mother was in the hospital and a decision had to be made about a nursing home.) Howie and I, along with a multitude of friends, have many visual reminders of our visits to Inverness and Meadville over the years --warm, wonderful memories indeed. I met Sammy when we were both in 7th grade at East End High School, and I spent many hours in the Miller home on Alden Street and was quite in awe of Sammy's big, older, wiser brothers. It was quite a thing in l937 to have your own airplane, or at least it was to a l3-year old from the depression Mid-West. So you see I go back a long way with your Dad and Mother.

Sam got a new Baby Animal book

January 27, 2001 by Adam in Family

Sam got a new Baby Animal book. He was pretty excited, as Tommy and Tess (two of the main characters) are his alter egos. I think I've made up stories about Tommy and Tess to Sam hundreds of times. When we're in the car, I tell one or two about them, and putting him to bed usually results in a half-dozen. As soon as we got it in the mail, he started looking at it and wanting me to read it to him. Very cute.

January 27, 2001 by Adam in Adam's Games

I've been playing a first person shooter - Star Trek Voyager: Elite Forces. It's a pretty basic shoot 'em up. A little bit of logic puzzles, but nothing extraordinary. Lots of good scripted sequences, which are somewhat entertaining. I'm also pretty happy that the voices are the ones from the actual cast.

It's also nice to do something in a different genre. Pretty soon, I'll probably dig into the Icewind Dale expansion.

It's been quite the whirlwind week for me

January 26, 2001 by Adam in Adam

It's been quite the whirlwind week for me. Sadie left this morning for school. Who knows when we'll see her next - she may be off to Africa after this term. Franklin is home, though he's very ill. Isabell is also home, the new baby keeping Seraph and Robbie quite busy.

I've been slogging along, as usual. I'm re-reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy, in preparation for the movie. I've been playing a bit of Voyager - Elite Forces and thinking about my next computer case modification.

Nerd things aside, I mostly spend time with my family. Sam is endlessly entertaining, if draining. Jamie manages to keep the household together and Sam in one piece.

Welcome to the family Isabell! With all of the coverage she's getting I assume she'll have her own web sight soon. We are slowly adjusting to life at home with a new baby. As wonderful as the hospital staff were, it's nice not to have people in poking at us every few hours.
We want to thank everyone near and far for all of your support. Wheather you brought us food, took photos, or made us laugh it was greatly appreciated and made the big event all the more memorable! We love you all lots and lots!!

January 25, 2001 by Yayoe in Danica Miller

Many thanks for posting your entries and the wonderful baby movies on the Internet. We look forward to clicking on to your website and seeing the family. I'm so glad and relieved we are here with your grandparents and Danica. Franklin's spirits are good but he is slowly fading away. It was only yesterday that the word CANCER was communicated to Dorothy and Franklin. I think we all knew at a deeper level that it was the BIG C. Today, Franklin and Dorothy started a dialogue about his concerns, e.g., selling the Florida
house and their boat.

Hospice service began yesterday with a team of caring and skilled nurses and aides. We are learning a lot about how to physically, medically, and spiritually care for a loved one. So far it takes all of us plus hospice to do the care mostly because we are so inexperienced. Our main concern is
keeping Franklin pain free but it is not always possible because he has a high pain threshold and doesn't like to complain.

He was up twice today having meals with us. He eats only small amounts but it is great to have him sitting at the table with us. We are all eating like small but growing piglets. This stress eating is not good but it is sure
comfortiing. Your dad is trying his best not to eat more than a bag of Kettle chips at a time. Danica got us hooked on Salsa and chips now. And of course, I still have my evening glass of wine with Dorothy.

She is hanging in there and trying to get her bills and the mail under control. It's amaziing how quickly the days have whizzed by. We have times of great sadness and tears and the other times are like normal...laughing, talking, watching TV etc.

Franklin let me massage his feet and back. It's a preventive measure since his skin is very fragile. We are trying to prevent bed sores....a dreded nemisis once it starts.

We've talked about a transitional care plan after we leave on the 31st (if all goes well). Dorothy will hire a private duty aide to sit with Franklin during the late night. Your dad and I are sitting up until 1 or 2 a.m. so we can help him with pain meds and turning. So enough for now. I'll be in touch.

Please share this with the family. Love Y and Daddo

So sorry we missed the big event of Isabella's arrival. Thanks for the movie, Adam, of the birth...it made me cry!(I have the cable modem so the high bandwith came through great.)
I put some of your album pictures in j-peg form and sent them on to Alex's sisters and some of my family. They were most impressed with the cute baby.

Sam's gotten really into hiding these days

January 24, 2001 by Adam in Sam

Sam's gotten really into hiding these days. He likes to "hide from the scary goats" (I told him the story of how goats tried to eat my hair as a child). From there, he moved into hiding in different places, remaining quiet and still for a long time. One time, we caught him hiding his head in the shopping bag. Why, no one knows.

January 24, 2001 by Adam in Family

Well, we went back later in the afternoon, took some pictures, and let Sam play with his new cousin. They're doing great, and Seraph looks wonderful, considering everything.

I also posted a couple movies, one where we were joking around before the actual birth, and another of the main event.

Oh, happy days

January 23, 2001 by Sue in Wielesek

Oh, happy days. As you can tell from the first page, mother and child are doing fine. It was the usual family event - we just had to be digitally and telephonically connected to more of the family than usual.

Sad news is that Lohring and Yayoe missed the event, and even sadder news is that Lohring's father's illness, which prompted them to leave for Pennsylvania earlier than they planned, is pancreatic cancer. He will be in all our thoughts.

January 23, 2001 by Adam in Family

Well, I finally made it over to see Seraph and Robbie. They were doing phenomenally well. Seraph looked great and Isabell was active and very aware. Evidently the labor was short and relatively easy. They delivered shortly after I left - about 9:45 PM on the 22nd.

Isabella was 9 pounds 1 ounce, quite a big baby. Large head and feet, with long fingers. She was quite perky, trying to eat anything that came close to her mouth. Seraph and Robbie look a little dazed, but no more than as can be expected for new parents. Even though Isabella slept most of last night, they couldn't sleep until 3 in the morning.

I'm going to work on getting some bigger pictures in the photo album. Tonight I'm going to try to post some of the movies that were taken last night.

January 23, 2001 by Adam in Family

Well, I slept through the exciting part. Evidently we got a phone call during the middle of the night letting us know that I have a niece. Don't have any other information besides that. At least, I think that's what happened. Jamie tried to wake me up and tell me. I remember she kept saying something like "do you know what I'm saying?" I must not have been too coherent.

9 PM

January 23, 2001 by Adam in Family

9 PM. When I left the hospital, Seraph was definately starting to feel it. She'd be perfectly normal one minute, then crushing her squeeze toy with all her might. Quite a crew was assembled as well: Sadie, Alan, Robbie, Hanni, Dick, Sue, Darren, Sam, and myself. Contractions were 2 minutes apart, so I'm guessing that we'll see a baby sometime after midnight.

January 23, 2001 by Adam in Family

Well, it's 5 PM and I'm at home. I'm going to probably eat some dinner, rest a bit, then head back into the fray. Seraph and Robbie seemed to be in good spirits. Seraph had her pitosin at noon, though the baby won't probably appear until tomorrow. I also have the scoop on the baby's name: Isabella Francis Ryn Cortez.

Seraph and Robbie are in the labor and delivery section of the hospital (room 201), chillin' and contemplating parenthood. with two digital video cameras, a tape recorder, and three cameras so far, this will officially be the most well recorded birth in the family. A sound track and tickets to the theatre replay will be available soon.
All expect the baby to come tomarrow, but we plan to camp out until the bitter end. Fortunatly, my five more days significant other (AKA Alan) will be bringing food tonight, and Adam has a years supply of peanuts in his cubical. I think we're set.

January 20, 2001 by Adam in Family

In honor of the impending baby, I put up a video titled Pushing the Baby Out. It was the favorite of the various movies I took last year, where Sam demonstrates the miracle of birth.

Sam was up at 5:30 this morning. My usual blissful weekend morning, filled with coffee and playing with my computer, was not as intended. Instead I made breakfast, watched cartoons, built forts, and looked for treasure. Such is the price of fatherhood, I suppose.

January 20, 2001 by Adam in Sam

I was trying to put Sam down to bed last night, and I suggested he snuggle for awhile between his parents:
"No! Just mom!"
"Why can't I lay down too?"
"But you're hairy all over."
Well, there you have it. I offered to shave my entire body, which Sam thought was pretty keen. In the final moments, thought, I couldn't bring myself do it.

January 20, 2001 by Adam in Family

Well, I've got the latest scoop on the new baby. I called Seraph and she said that it's coming very soon. If it doesn't come naturally this weekend, they're going in for Monday at noon to induce. So, expect exciting baby news very soon!

I won the MVP award at work - given to three employees a year. It's nice, and I get a jacket and gift certificate. The hard part has been trying to come up with increasingly witty things to say with each congratulatory e-mail. Ah, the price of fame.

January 16, 2001 by Adam in Family

Sam wanted to take a picture of me last night, so here it is. He's turning into more of a character every day. Last night, we were at the supermarket checkout stand. I was explaining how the lady moved the food over the window, and that inside the window was a laser. Sam replied, "Just like Buzz Lightyear!". So, evidently he now associates scanning bar codes with his favorite movie superhero.

Called Robbie last night. Still no baby yet. They've got another ultrasound this Friday, so we'll hopefully find out an ETA fairly soon. I've got the video camera and tripod packed and ready.

We're back from our dream vacation

January 14, 2001 by Adam in Family

We're back from our dream vacation. It was pretty wonderful - I read a book and a half and we watched three whole movies. Breakfast in bed (though it was vaguely like airplane food). The room itself was quite expansive and we basically stayed in it the whole time.

We were telling Sam, Judy, and Jim our adventures. We had gone to dinner at Poppy Anatolia's. After I said that, Sam repeated what he thought I said: "Monkey on the Toilet". Ah, the joys of 2-year-old humor.

I finished up Escape from Monkey Island last night. I think my favorite quote from the game is "Be the giant monkey robot, Guybrush". Not sure what game to move on to next. Giants looks pretty good. I may also just wait until Arcanium or the Icewind Dale expansion.

Until then, I have my case Mods and Neverwinter Nights stuff to keep me busy.

Jamie and I are ready to go off to our romantic getaway, one of Jamie's Christmas presents. Jim and Judy are watching Sam today and tonight while we check in to the Phoenix Inn. Since we've been married for almost six years now, I'm bringing a bunch of movies to watch and Jamie's brining her knitting. Pretty boring, but bliss to two people who spend their days watching a two-year-old run around the house screaming "I'm a rocket! Blast off!"

Well we all made it through the holidays, and are now setting our minds to the next century. A REALLY big thank you to Jenny for giving us a wonderful baby shower!!! Many of the people we talked said it was one of the most fun showers they had been to. Also a thank you to Mom and Dick for again taking us all to the opera on New Years. We figure this may be one of the last times we'll see midnight as a fun time for awhile! For those of you following the yet to be heard from baby news: according to the doctor there's still no new news. My due date is next Friday and I also have an appointment on that day. They schedualed an ultra sound to check out her size again. I'm not quite sure where this baby gets her stuborn streek from (be quiet!), but it can't be a good sign! Anyway, we'll keep you posted.

January 12, 2001 by Adam in Sam

Poor Sam has a cold today. He woke up crying, like he often does, so I scooped him up and dumped him in bed with Jamie. After a shower, I still heard him crying, so I went back upstairs. He settled down and then I heard this conversation:
"Where are you mom?"
"I'm right here, sweetie."
"Where's your head, though?"
I suppose some parts of mom are more important than others.

January 12, 2001 by Sadie in Sadie & Greg

Really, so many exciting things happening in my life, I can hardly stand it. Best of all, I'm still at home with my family and most lovely pseudo boyfriend. After a gourmet breakfast and Turkish coffee with the one and only Alan Bergland, Sam and I played all day. Sara Spettel just got her wisdom teeth out, so Jenny Minnity Shippey and I might go over with ice cream and a trashy movie later this evening. All in all, life is as relaxing and cultured as ever, with frequent visits to the art museum for Russian avante garde painting, home town galleries for local wonders, and, as always, Eugene lovin'.

January 11, 2001 by Adam in Adam's Projects

Well, I got Jenny's new computer all ready to go, but it somehow got vaporized after a few days at her house. Not sure what happened exactly. I suspect Darren did something that he thought would fix it (the Millenium restore feature), but it unfortunately restored back to a point a long time ago. Easy to fix, but I never got the on-board sound working again.

Fortunately, I had a spare sound card floating around. Easy enough to plug in. Now it's just waiting to be picked up again. They should probably get a new monitor too, the currently one only support 640X480.

The offending candy popped out on the floor, but gave us all a big scare. A big thanks goes to Jamie for watching Sam so carefully.

By the way, the photo isn't him actually choking. It's just Sam's re-enactment of the scene.

The new millenium

January 08, 2001 by Sue in Wielesek

The new millenium. It would be interesting for someone a thousand years from now to try to imagine our daily lives.
New Years Day was fun as always - our traditional trip to Steve and Marsha's house to watch the Rose Bowl.

We also had a delightful day on Saturday the 6th - Dick, Sadie and I went to the Portland Art Museum to see an exhibit of Russian Avant Garde painters - oooooh, just wonderful. It's hard to top the Russians in art and music. It was a beautiful sunny day. We had good food, but Sadie had one thing which will cause some confusion in 3K. At one restaurant, Sadie ordered a shot of wheat grass, and the waiter cut some grass from this flat of grass and ground it up in a grinder, where it turned into this goopy green drink, which Sadie downed in one gulp. Hmmmm......progress!
Love to all, om

Another fun filled weekend comes to a close

January 08, 2001 by Adam in Family

Another fun filled weekend comes to a close. I had Sam for much of today. We got Jenny's new computer ready to go. It worked well after some minor excitement. Sam and I also visited the park and played in the sand. Jamie actually had some time off this weekend, going to book club and finishing up a knit hat.

Sam and I also checked out Iron Giant. It was probably a little old for him - he made me turn it off a couple times. Still, he seemed to enjoy it. He marched around the house for an hour afterwards, pretending he was a giant robot.

January 07, 2001 by Adam in Family

I went over to my friend Chris' house for his birthday. He turned 30 and celebrated with a Star Wars themed party. It was pretty amazing how much Star Wars paraphernalia he had - cook books, music, Legos, action figures, talking communicators, trivial pursuit games, table cloth, and so on. Half the stuff was still packed away. Hey, by comparison I feel pretty normal.

January 07, 2001 by Adam in Sam

I watched Sam for most of the day today. He was a bit of a wild boy, running around and yelling a lot. After having breakfast with Jamie, we hit the toy store, the book store, and Amazon park. I just finished plunking him down for bed, where he completely collapsed. My favorite weird quote of the day is "But I'm not a gell ball."

Mmm

January 06, 2001 by Adam in Adam's Projects

Mmm...Legos. Sam took this picture while we were putting together his Technic car. It has a little motor that turns gears and spins wheels. Kinda fun.

I'm still mulling over the Lego computer. I'm going to have a couple old Dells to fiddle with. I'm thinking of getting some large, flat, Lego pieces and gluing it to the sides and front. Less ambitious than the old case, but probably doable.

Well, I think my sister's computer is almost ready to go. There was a bit of excitement when it wouldn't boot up - the POST beeps indicated a video problem. I was freaking because my other AGP video card didn't work, but the PCI card did. It turned out that I just didn't push it in hard enough. Silly me.

One word: Mulan

One word: Mulan. Sam has been watching Mulan almost non-stop since we got it, taking the occasional break for Arisocats. The new DVD player is pretty cool - nice quality and more convenient than tape. Since Sam watches movies over and over, it's nice that the quality doesn't degrade much.

I've been back to work a couple days now. A bit rough, but I think I'm sort of on top of things. I only had 150+ e-mails to deal with, so it wasn't too bad.

The first day of the new millenium was pretty quiet. We visited Seraph and Robbie today, dropping off yet more baby things for the expectant parents. They had run into a balloon guy who had been at First Night and managed to walk away with this strange contraption. Finally, Seraph has one part of her body appear bigger than her stomach!

Happy New Year! We spent an exciting evening last night, though not for the usual reasons. We tried putting Sam to bed at 9 pm (sounded reasonable to us) and keeping him in his room until he fell asleep. Unfortunately, he'd slept in that day and taken a nap, so he didn't get to sleep until almost 11. We collapsed with exhaustion and snored through midnight.
