Emma's life seems an endless game

 Emma's life seems an endless game. She loves the "monster" game, typically involving hiding from monsters or having me chase her around the house, preferrably to exciting music. Yesterday we invented a game that involved climbing up me, then flipping backwards onto the bed. With her getting so big, it's like an extra workout every weekend.
Emma's also endlessly curious. She loves the light that comes in through our front door, exclaiming "rainbow" and pointing to it. When we're outside, she's always looking for slugs and bugs and interesting plants. I imagine they all run fleeing from her grip, as she tends to crush them with love.
She's also putting together long sentences like "Grandma Judy made that for you." and "Emma do it self." (when she wants to do something herself).
On occasion she can be pretty grumpy, bonking people to get their attention or grabbing things away from Sam. Still, she's usually very sweet. She'll give people hugs and kisses, and sometimes extend the courtesy to her stuffed animals, plants, or slugs.

Sam's creativity continues to amaze me

 Sam's creativity continues to amaze me. He developed this elaborate game involving drawing villages and armies, and then asking me questions about what I wanted do next. I'd tell him to build farms or defensive walls, then he'd scribble with his colored pencils. Finally there was a great clash with the enemy, usually resulting in eraser fuzz flying everywhere.
Sam's reading continues to improve as well. He can usually sound out most short words and easily read the book I picked for him last night. We have an arrangement where he reads a book and then I read a comic book to him. Pretty much everyone is satisfied.

 Yesterday was filled with kids, starting at 6:30 in the morning when Emma got handed to me and ending at 8:00 that night when they went to bed. Fortunately they were good and cute and funny, which made it all worthwhile.
Emma, Jamie, and I took a long walk to get money and bread while Graham played with Sam. Jamie was invited to an Oscar party at the Hilton, so she spent half the walk talking on the phone to get help on her fashion emergency. After lunch she ran off to visit Kirsten's house and go to the store, briefly returning to dress and do her hair before leaving for the event. Evidently all the men were in tuxedos and the women in gowns, so I suppose it was all worth it. She had a great time too and came back right before the kid's bedtime.
Sam and I played while Emma napped, with him doing this elaborate drawing game. Once everyone woke up, we played outside in the sunshine, then went inside for Spiderman and dinner. I'd whisk Emma away for the scary parts, though she still ran around for the rest of the night yelling "Jump Spiderman!" Then it was bathtime, Jamie's return, and bed.
Emma got ahold of Jamie's boots at the end of the day and clomped around on the floor. Unfortunately her balance wasn't all that good and she bonked her knees falling down. I rushed upstairs and caught the aftermath on film.

Thought I should take a moment away from the penguin talk to actually post about our lives. We've all been sick with the flu (yes, the real thing) since the middle of last week. First Robbie, then Isa, and then myself. We're slowly pulling out of the worst stages (fevers and chills), and now just have the aches, coughing and congestion. I've been taking every drug induced healthy moment work on homework, while Robbie and Isa have tried to soak in as much of the good weather before it goes away. Our move to the upstairs apartment is looking like it might go forward. We will unfortunately be moving right in the middle of finals, and there is little time between our moving out and the new folks moving in, so cleaning will be done a super speeds! We will need to juggle back the frigerators and such, but things will work out.

 I was feeling stressed out yesterday, though I'd calmed down a bit by the end of the day. I made it to the library and took care of a book they lost (by finding it in the stacks and bringing it to them). I also found a way onto the roof from the balcony and spread moss killer on the roof. The kids and I also spent a lot of time outside since the weather was so nice. The sandbox has been a big hit lately.
Towards the end of the day, Jamie's family began to arrive. Dave was the first, showing up in full pirate gear. The kids thought all the pirate stuff was great and I'd put together a CD of pirate songs to add to the ambiance. Pretty soon it was non-stop running around, watching kids and organizing dinner and such.
At the end of the day I was exhausted from the excitement and waking up at 4:30 that morning. I took a long hot bath, watched some Alias, and went to bed. Hopefully today we can all take it easy.

Work has gotten incredibly stressful

Work has gotten incredibly stressful. This morning I woke up, connected to our intranet, and spent an hour and a half of my Saturday morning writing code. After finishing up one project and answering e-mails, I made myself stop and do something enjoyable.
I switched over to a little Unreal Tournament 2004 and spent the next twenty minutes blowing up a whole lot of stuff.
There's a huge amount of change happening at work and I'm trying to help shield my customers from the brunt of it, as well as trying to help Glen not go crazy. We have one developer taking a month off, two pregnant, a new hire, a position about to be hired, and a slew of people from another team that just merged with ours. Unfortunately most of the work is falling to me.

 I was all ready to leap onto the roof last night to lay down a lethal coat of moss-be-gone. Sadly the new windows open in the middle, making it impossible for anyone to get to the roof. I'm not sure if I should curse the window company, or thank them for getting me out of an annoying task.
Work has been crazy busy as of late. We're still dealing with the coming together of the two teams. Dave and I noticed that Glen was beginning to go mad, so we had an intervention and we're trying to see if we can find ways to ease his pain a bit. Unfortunately I think it means that I'll be bearing some of that.
It's my Mocha Friday, though I've yet to get to work to enjoy it. I'm very much looking forward to the weekend. Jamie's family is coming down to throw a birthday party for Dave. I'm pretty sure that explains the "Happy Birthday Cap'n Dave" poster hanging in our hallway.

In honor of Wendell and Cass, the penguin life partners, Anna gave me two truffles in the shape of penguins for our third anniversary. Aww.
Things will slow down in a couple of weeks, but right now work is running and running. I love it. Today I wrote up a self-review of everything I've done so far. It seems like things began in slow motion as I was learning the job, and now it's in fast forward. I need to think and worry less about things before I do them- ah, experience!
I just got four cds in the mail from Lohring- the Donnas and Trick Pony, and have been rocking out all day. I feel very loved.

 Wednesday already. My how time flies. Work has been really frantic the last few days, to the point where I'm overjoyed to return home to the kids.
Emma's stringing together complete sentences these days. She's very good and expressing what she wants. She makes a really funny grumpy face, to the point where we usually just laugh when she wants candy and whines.
Sam's been really getting into making friends. Renee came over yesterday, as I discovered when I found a toy gorilla in my closet. Evidently they were pretending to be spies, though I didn't ask how the gorilla worked into the game. Sadly Renee will be leaving soon as her father was recently layed off.

I love my new digital camera

 I love my new digital camera. It has lots of nice little features and the image quality is pretty darn good. I was having fun last night taking videos with sound, zooming around the pictures I took using the LCD on the back, and so on. I like the way it seals itself up when the lens isn't in use.
It's a Canon Powershot A400 in case anyone's in the market for a new digital camera.

After working late at the office Friday night, I headed to the law school on Saturday morning to serve as a judge at the student client counseling regionals - the students are supposed to be attorneys interviewing a client for the first
time. Things have changed since I went to law school; for one thing, architecture schools are starting to graduate women who obviously have done a little research on how much longer it takes women to pee than men, and are designing public buildings accordingly. In the afternoon, I ran long overdue errands, then went to Dez'Cub Scout banquet/potluck,
where I hope I fooled them with my faux home fried chicken.
The Scouts make baked goods, which are auctioned off as a fund raiser. I bought a $35 carrot cake , and Yayoe and I looked on with amazement and disgust as your father bid on, bought, and inhaled a huge plate of peanut butter cookies in some sort of new land speed record.
I had fun with Isa on Sunday; her favorite activity is going through the car wash, the Tunnel of Doom. She and I picked up Jordan and went to Burger King. I looked across the table at those two cute little faces and recounted my blessings. Jenny was painting her kitchen and living room,
which left me in awe - painting with two kids, and a spare,
as Isa and Dez wanted to play longer. An amazing woman!
Then home, where I had an architect stop by to talk with me
about adding an additional house on the property. He was pretty discouraging in terms of space per construction dollar, which was actually a helpful point of view. I unloaded the carrot cake on him; he has a teenage kid, who probably will shed the calories in a day, while they would linger on, eventually part of my lifestyle.

Well, I got the new camera

 Well, I got the new camera. It's quite easy to use, taking only a couple minutes to put it together and take a few snapshots of everyone. In theory the number of megapixels is smaller than my Kodak, but the image quality is great so far. I was even able to reuse my old memory card, pulling off the last pictures before it decided to blow up.
Sunday went well, with Angie and Jamie whipping up all sorts of tasty treats while drinking wine and chatting. The weather was so nice that we opened up the sandbox and the kids got exceptionally sandy. With that and the park, they managed two baths, a shower, and a sink rinse off between them.
Well, my family pointed out one flaw with the new camera. It makes me look old.

 Well, the image isn't from my new camera, but rather my video camera that's still working after all these years. I even whipped up a new movie, this one is Emma trying out her musical talents.
It was pretty busy yesterday, with Emma waking up early. We also managed a massive gardening project in the morning, moving large amounts of dirt and a big rose in preparation for replanting a bed. Sam exclaimed "now that's gardening!" after moving a particularly large glob of dirt. That's my boy.
Robbie and Isabell came over in the afternoon to exchange CDs and drop off their dead laptop. I haven't decided whether to try to fix the LCD or punt and just hook up a monitor and mouse, which sort of defeats the whole laptop thing. Sam had a particularly good time with Isabell, who is transitioning from being a toddler to a big kid and thus more entertaining to Sam. Dave and Kirsten arrived later on to join the social event. Finally, we settled down to watch Shark's Tale and eat popcorn.
I don't think we're doing anything too exciting today. Angie is coming over to cook with Angie. There's lots of miscellaneous tasks Jamie has assigned to me. We'll see how it goes.

Sweet, sweet mocha Friday has come once again. This morning before I left for work, Jamie and Emma came down to visit. Emma is extremely cute and not particularly happy that I was headed to work today. It's nice to feel loved, though I wish my leaving didn't make her feel so bad.
Sam has another play date today, going over to Ethan's house with Caden to watch Star Wars and eat pizza. It's fun watching him slowly figure out how to make friends and play with people other than his parents.
My new camera should arrive on Monday, which is a good thing. I'm having camera withdrawl, wanting to post images of all the wacky things that the kids do.

Sniff. The New York Aquarium in Brooklyn had a fairly well-known pair of boyfriends: blackfoot penguins Wendell and Cass never showed any interest in female penguins, and were a mated pair for about 10 years, said aquarium spokeswoman Fran Hackett.
Sadly, Cass passed away recently, Hackett said, and in keeping with penguins' tendency to mate for life, Wendell hasn't taken up another companion.

Emma was up early this morning, handed to me by a tired Jamie as she woke up. Emma was in fairly good spirits and we played on the computer, pretended a monster was after us, and ate a bowl of cereal together. Eventually Jamie got up and I biked through the cold to work.
Sam's been having lots of play dates with people in his school. He had a good one with Caden yesterday, playing with Legos and GI Joes. I think there's another one on Monday with yet another kid.

I blew up my digital camera last night, unscrewing it from a tripod. It made a loud popping noise that sounded like something exploding, never a good sign. I'm leaning towards a static electricity situation, but it could be anything.
Anyway, I plunked down some cash and a new camera should arrive next week. The resolution is a bit lower than what I currently have, but it's a highly rated Canon and I was never satisfied with the quality of the Kodak (sorry Danica and Andy). I had the option of a $140 camera or a $280 camera, but decided the cheaper one had a better price/performance ratio.
For some bizarre reason I'm being cheery at work, even though massive amounts of work is coming my way. Fortunately I made some progress on a rather large database project. It involves importing 2 million records each day, which is nearly a billion records a year. Whew.

This morning I took the kids to Costco...not my favorite place to be with two youngsters, but a challenge I accepted considering the alternative, three hours in the basement! Emma did not want to sit down in the cart, unless it was while bouncing on the box of frozen sausage patties. Sam said, "Do you want to hear a story?" and proceeded to recite non-stop (and I am not exaggerating here) a story from his own imagination throughout the shopping trip, all the way home, while unpacking the groceries and doing laundry. Finally I had to insert my own "The End" when it was time for school! Now, Sam is at a friend's house and Emma is napping like Brant. Ah, blessed silence ;-)

Happy Valentine's Day to all

 Happy Valentine's Day to all. I actually enjoyed going to work today, taking care of all the things that had piled up the week before. It also helped that I worked through lunch and left around one o'clock to head home to my sweetie.
We had lunch and Jamie gave me a card and assorted goodies, one of which was an espresso scented soap bar. I kept saying bad words to see if she'd wash my mouth out, but it didn't work. Later we played with Emma in the park and generally hung out. Sam went to Renee's house after school, so he came home later than normal.
The kids got a couple red shirts in the mail from grandma Judy. In general, they seemed pretty excited about the day's events. Sam in particular got lots of candy which he gratiously shared with Emma.

Happy Valentine's Day! I won't get to see much of my family today, as I have both a morning and an evening class, but Robbie slipped a card into my school work last night, so I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy today!
This was tax a FAFSA (financil aid) weekend for me. Our living room is still piled high with paperwork, but we are mostly finished. I'm going to let some friends at work use Turbo Tax, but if anyone in Eugene is interested as well, let me know!
The church we go to up here turns 100 years old today. Yesterday they had a "birthday" party, and it was fun to see some of the old pictures they brought out. It was amazing to see how few houses were around when the church was built. There were funny little stories as well, such as when one of the early families bought bells for the church tower so that they could be rung at their (numerous) daughters weddings!
Robbie then took Isa and two of the neighbor kids to the zoo in the afternoon while I did homework. We all tried to settle in early, with little success.
The week is promising to trudge along slowly as many of my midterms continue this week.

It's Monday afternoon, and the snow is threatening to cover any possibilities of spring. I spent a wonderful weekend in Northampton, buying used cds and stocking up on other metropolitan basics. My friend Annamo and I went to the Vagina Monologues on Saturday and then to a great blues bar called the basement. I requested a song, and the muscicians were incredulous that I knew the Candyman Blues. After my friends assured me that that was a compliment, I felt pretty good about it. Work is only somewhat hideous right now, with tutor coordinating wrapping up. Soon I can go back to my little exciting projects.

It's the end of the weekend

 It's the end of the weekend. I'm pretty exhausted, with my day starting around five this morning with Emma deciding to get up early. Since Sam was at Dave's house, it was just the two of us until Jamie woke up a few hours later. Fortunately Emma is very cute.
The three of us went on a shopping expedition around noon, returning with assorted goodies. Sam returned later that afternoon, fairly wound up from hanging out with Dave and Josh for so long.
Now I'm watching Alias, eating my cereal, and looking forward to getting some sleep tonight.

Emma keeps getting bigger each and every day

 Emma keeps getting bigger each and every day. We had a nice walk around the block just the two of us yesterday. She wanted to walk on every tall thing, poke in every muddy crack, and move rocks from place to place.
Her vocabulary continues to expand by leaps and bounds. She's also gotten very good at mimicking pretty much anything someone says. I'd imagine she'd be fun to bring to parties.

Friday at work came and went, another painful...

 Friday at work came and went, another painful all day meeting. It was a relief to return home and play with the kids.
Saturday was fairly exciting for everyone. Emma and I had an adventure when she first woke up, going out to eat pain au chocolate and listen to music at Metropol bakery. I took the kids outside in the rain later that morning while Jamie went to have coffee with a friend. After lunch, Josh, Sam, my mom, and I all went to see the new Natural History Museum at the U of O. Finally, Dave, Josh, and Kirsten had dinner at our house and took Sam away for a sleep over.
Emma went to sleep early and Jamie and I had an unheard of evening to ourselves. We watched fifteen minutes of a bad movie, played Trivial Pursuit, and chatted while I rubbed her feet.
It's been nice that everyone's relatively healthy and happy this weekend. Emma's still not sleeping quite as smoothly as we'd like. She was up at five this morning and is playing away on the computer beside me.

Friday night, and about ready to head home. It's clear and sunny, so it will probably be cold again tonight. My daffodils have started to bloom, sort of huddled together

nights. I'm hoping to take Sam and Josh to the reopened Museum of Natural History on campus this weekend. I chatted briefly with Sadie about selling her Miss Bunny the Honda Car and getting a pickup with factory air and comfortable back seats. Time flies,it was a week ago today that I went to Portland to visit with Robbie, Seraph and Isabell.Friday morning Isabell and I took off for Eugene. After arriving here we had to have lunch at Isabell's favorite place, Burger King.Since I also had to go grocery shopping,I had Isabell write the grocery list for me. I spelled the words for her and she wrote them down. Pretty impressive for a four-year-old. Saturday morning was a beautiful sunny warm day,so we walked to the park and played there most of the morning.In the afternoon we drove to Destin's birthday party,where the kids had a lot of fun. Grandma Susi took Isabell home with her after the party for a sleepover and also drove her back home to Portland Sunday morning. So we all had a wonderful weekend

 I just got word that my old friends Jason and Bridget just had their baby last week. We've drifted apart a bit - I haven't really had time for anything other than work and family - but it was neat to hear from him.
Soon enough I'm sure they'll be knee deep in diapers, sleepless nights, and communicating to their spouse primarily via phone and email.
Work was nutty today. I essentially did no work, instead going from meeting to meeting and cranking through endless e-mails. The next two days are filled with all-day meetings too, so it'll get worse before it gets better.

Wednesday already

 Wednesday already. The days seem to pass in a blur. Emma still seems a little sick, though much better than Sunday when she had a fever. She's still on antibiotics for her ear infection, which I hope is done with after this.
There seems to be a rash of babies being born or conceived lately. We have two pregnant team members, one of which will likely not return, at least fulltime. The wife of a coworker is pregnant again, and one of my customers just had a baby yesterday. There's something in the water, I guess.
Sam and I had a lot of fun last night doing acrobatics in the basement. We did the old "walk up dad" standby where I hold his hands and he climbs up my legs and flips. From there we progressed to swings and other tricks. It's a good thing I work out as I otherwise would have thrown out my back. At 52 pounds, I can officially say that Sam's a big kid.

Robbie and I had a fun day Saterday cooking and then having friends over for dinner. We all stayed up to late (and probably had more wine then usual - which for me is about 2 glasses!). We actually slept until 11am on Sunday morning, which I don't think I've done since I was 16!
Mom brought Isa back safe and sound, and we spent the day snuggling, watching Peter Pan (many times), and doing homework (well, I did).
This is midterms week for me, and I'm not quite sure how we got here already. I'm very much looking forward to the end of this term, and to the beginning of summer.
We may be moving to the apartment above us in March or April. It's all very tentitive right now, but we'll let you all know!

 Emma was sick again yesterday, running a fever and generally whining. Poor girl. I think she ended up with three baths and spent most of the day holding on to Jamie. We've been keeping the antibiotics going as well as periodic Tylenol.
Dave and Kirsten came over for a little yesterday, in hopes of relieving me when Jamie went off to Angie's birthday. I think Emma lasted about five minutes tops before I had to do the daddy thing and distract her from wanting mom.

 Destin's tenth birthday was yesterday. Sam and I swung by a computer game store to pick up an odd little game involving rolling a sticky ball around that picks up stuff. Then it was knee-deep in kids running around and adults trying to either supervise or ignore them. We had a good time, arriving home tired and ready for the pizza that Jamie made.
Today looks to be fairly quiet. I think we'll mostly hang out here at home and do domestic things. If I'm really brave I'll see if that bolt I lost painting the bathroom fell into the bucket of paint that's now somewhere in the storage area under the porch.

 My dad and Yayoe were over last night. Everyone had a good time, with Yayoe playing playdough with Sam and my dad playing with Emma in the basement. Jamie even snuck off to have some time to herself in the middle of it all.
This morning we hiked down to the library and picked up some new books. Going back was a little rough as I carried both kids up the hill for a couple blocks. I knew there was a reason I worked out every day.

 I haven't really had a chance to play on my computer much. It's typically focused on working on my own games, which isn't always entertaining.
I recently ran across a mod for Half-Life 2 called Garry's Mod. It's a small but flexible mod that lets you play around with the physics aspects of the game. There's no plot to speak of and only one open level to mess around with.
Still, it's been loads of fun for both Sam and I. I had my dad laughing out loud as he launched endless floating robots to stick to each other and create this huge monstrous thing. Well, the funny part was when I switched his weapon to a balloon launcher and he floated the creatures away.
I even made my own car using a big block, oil drums, and a propane tank for thrust. It didn't work out very well, though, as you can see by this picture. It's all fun and games until someone launches the car into the water and catches everything on fire.

A fun dinner with Adam and Jamie. Sam and I are finishing up our space saga, with dialog which consists mostly of "Pow, pow!" and "Watch out for the Beastmaster!" and starting a spy drama, broadening our acting range.
End of the week, and a good weekend coming up. Dez' birthday party, and Isa for a sleepover. Oh, and I nearly forgot - Superbowl Sunday afternoon at a girlfriend's house.
I do have some big news; I'm going on a Rick Steves trip to
Eastern Europe at the end of September. John Cass is going, so I will have company. He wants to spend some time in London at the end of the trip, where I hope we can visit the cousins. A great incentive to lose ten pounds! Good weekend to all, and many snowy hugs to Sadie. Love, mom

 Work is slowly getting more manageable again, though the sense of business hasn't yet faded. I've been fortunate to have Jonathan as my counterpart as he's been very much able to take on the work I throw his way.
I also seem to have become addicted to a new t.v. show. I've been watching Alias, getting drawn into the lengthy plotlines and twists. I'm a sucker for spy movies and am currently reading the Borne Identity when I do the stair stepper at work. For a few days there it was an episode in at night and another in the morning. Great fun.

Mocha Friday. I think everyone in the household is mostly healthy. Emma's second ear infection is being treated and she doesn't seem to mind the taste of the antibiotics so much. She hasn't been sleeping very well, though. My attempts to put her to bed were thwarted and Jamie had to take over.
We had my mom over for dinner last night, which was very pleasant. Sam in particular really had a great time playing pretend with her. Tonight my dad and Yayoe arrive for dinner. What a social week it's proving to be.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DESTIN!!!
Well, I just got to the computer lab, only to find out that I didn't properly save my homework onto my disk! I'm desperatly hoping that Robbie can e-mail it to me before class is out. Argggg.
Other than that all is going well. Isa is excited about her trip to Eugene this weekend. When I told her about it yesterday she promptly said "I'm going to go pack!"
Back to Destin's birthday... It's funny to think how fast the time is going! I still clearly remember the note on my dorm room door that said "You're an Aunt!"

Emma's ear infection seemed to have cleared up earlier this week as Jamie took her into the doctor just to make sure. A couple days later, she was tugging at her ear again and reporting problems. We're back to a second round of antibiotics. Fortunately the flavor of this one is better and she doesn't struggle quite as much drinking it. The only weird thing Jamie noticed is that Emma now seems to sweat out an odd fruity smell. Weird.
Emma continues to be quite chatty. As I left for work today, she gave me a hug and a "love you". It was very sweet. I also got a phone call that included lots of confused talk about "pull white things". Jamie later let me know that she was talking to Sam about Little House on the Prarie and "pulling wagons". Context is everything.

This has been three really long weeks, both boys have been sick with colds, sinus infections and now Patrick is having kidney/bladder problems which have become a great concern. We spent the afternoon at Childrens doing tests and hope to have some answers tommorrow. He is in a great deal of pain. I am hoping for something simple although cultures have come back negative for infection. I'll keep you posted by this venue. Love to all Bets

I think Seraph failed to tell us her grades last term. Why, I'm not sure; they were even better than first term's 3 A s and 2 A minuses. Seraph, a rousing chorus of "We're proud of you" from Mr. Rogers, the fam, and me.

Mid week already

Mid week already. Whew. I was in all day meetings at work yesterday, and it'll be half of today as well. It was the first time I'd met a number of the new people on our team, so it was quite informative. Later on we went to my manager's house for dinner, with Emma shouting out "pizza party" all the way there.
Poor Emma might have yet another illness. She was having troubles sleeping last night and was up early wimpering a bit. I always feel bad when my kids are in pain, so I'm fretting a bit.
We have a busy week ahead of us. Two more dinners with family, then Destin's birthday party this weekend.
