Day 3 was a wonderful day for me. I drove down to Franklin, though I was never able to make connections with Cousin Kathy. I had a good visit with the people who bought Grandma Jones' house, and a tour through both 818 and 816 Buffalo. The rhody we planted in 1970 is quite large! I got back in time for my class reunion dinner, and got to see quite a few people I actually liked at Allegheny. Incidentally, in spite of my fear of cold weather, it was quite lovely.

Its our last day in Bend. We're at Brant's house, hanging out and staying cool. Emma's playing on the Wii and Jame and Sam are walking around the grounds. We've had a quiet and lazy morning, going to a nearby water park to run around and swim.

We've had a rather tramatic week down here. Shilo, our new dog, was attacked by a larger dog on Monday.
While a lot of her wounds were superficial, she had one in her side that was really deep, and she had some air pocketing under her skin. Arlene saved the day with her animal know-how, and by Tuesday Shilo was doing better, but the air pockets were still there.
I made a vet apt for her on Wed morning, and they were worried that she may have punctured her lung. They did minor sugery in the afternoon, and drained off the air, and some other fluids, but found that the hole in her lung had already healed its self.
We picked her up this morning, and apart from her looking like a pathetic shaved poodle, she does have shockingly bad bruises on her belly. She's still moving a bit slow, but did manage a some barks "hello" to the sheep!
The vet's office recomends that she stay inside for a week, but they don't know Shilo very well. This little dog was really supposed to have much longer legs!

We're hanging out at the Silverleaf Cafe in Bend after a long walk over. Jamie and Emma are finding a place to sit outside. Sam's gone off with Jim and Brant to catch some fish. It's yet another very lazy day.
Emma went horseback riding and loved it, drawing pictures of Snickers the horse when we got home. Yesterday at the pool she made me be Snickers and rode me around the pool.
Yesterday Jamie, Brant, and Sam floated down the Deshutes and returned home exhausted. Today everyone was up early to get Sam ready for fishing.
I think we'll take it easy today and hit Smith Rock tomorrow. Friday we return home to real life. I have work on the shed and balcony waiting for me.

Happy Father's Day!!!
We went to a pancake breakfast at church this morning. After church we came home and Robbie got his gift. It's a portible disc catcher for disc golf. He set it up in the front yard, and threw a hole-in-one right away!
We then went up to Sipapu for lunch and a walk around. After we got back we rested a bit, then went for a long hike up the Picuris Road. Now, we're kicking back and nibbling on some dinner.

We made it to Bend, safe and sound. I've managed to snag a wireless connection by driving to the nearby cafe at 5:30 on a Sunday morning while everyone else sleeps away. Hopefully I can get Skype working to wish my dad a happy Father's Day.
Everyone is definitely in vacation mode. We rented bikes and rode around Eagle Crest. Dave's here for the weekend and the kids and I went swimming with him. There have been lots of movies and playing Sims 3.
I suspect the rest of the week will be much of the same. It's very nice to be lazy from time to time.

It's Mocha Friday, and I just finished the last drop of that delicious elixir.
We're also off to Bend this afternoon. I spent this morning getting everything packed. I'm getting quite good at stripping down and preparing my computer for transport. We've all been playing Sims 3, which arrived earlier this week. Last night I decided to make a Sim for Sadie, who is well on her way to becoming a rock goddess.
Speaking of Sadie, I Skyped her after work from my little netbook. It was great to be able to carry her out to the shed and show off my work. She kept remarking how sunny and nice it was, so I tried to play up how gorgeous it's been in our little valley.
Sunday is Father's Day, and I'll sadly be far away from my dad. I'll throw out a premature "Happy Father's Day" just in case. There's an open wireless connection at Eagle Crest's cafe. I may try to sneak down and Skype him from there. Dad - if you get a call from "Robot", that's me.
I think we're all pretty excited to head off to Bend. I'll see if I can post while we're there. In a sense, it's a dry run for our England trip, which I'm hoping I can stay connected while we run about. Our days will likely be filled with swimming, hiking, and lounging about. Sam's scheduled for a few fishing trips with Jim and Brant, plus a trip down a river in intertubes.

Another weekend has come and gone

Another weekend has come and gone. I had dreams of puttying drywall last night, a testament to the amount of work I put into the shed. Sam helped me for a couple hours on Saturday and then everyone pitched in to help put up the ceiling. Now the lower part of the shed has all the walls up, and with a bit more putty work, I'll be ready for painting.
Emma was a little under the weather, so we didn't do anything too exciting. Saturday we made strawberry jam, which ended up tasting wonderfully. Saturday we walked around the neighborhood and went to the park. In between was a library trip and lots of playing with kids. Emma's reading is improving and last night Emma, Sam and I played a modified game of Apples to Apples. She would sound out the words and get it right about half the time. It's pretty exciting watching her figure it out.
The kids have a few more days of school and then we're off to Bend for next week. Fun, fun.

Day 2 I got up very late, checked in with Dorothy and Yayoe, and went to the reunion dinner on the lawn. In spite of the weather forecast, the weather was generally sunny, and I didn't need the umbrella I'd brought. I had reserved a room at a hotel south of meadville, on Sugar Lake, and was expecting standard if slightly down at the heels local motel. Instead, it was an ancient,(100 year old) basic (ie. no showers in the rooms) resort/fishing hotel, with a bar on the main floor, rocknroll bands on Friday and Saturday night, attended by the entire population of rural pa. who liked a good party.
Nonetheless, the location, about 50 yards from the lake,
was lovely, and I stayed there the next three nights.
This first afternoon involved a reception for the larger donors, and we saw lots of folks Dorothy knew, and a good time was had by all.

 It's a fine Mocha Friday, a full cup of that delicious nectar of the gods resting before me.
It was an odd morning, with Sam over at John's house. As I went out the door, I heard a knocking from upstairs and Emma wanted to say goodbye before I left. She seems to have a bit of the sniffles, allergies perhaps. She was also disappointed that her day off school didn't include a day off of work for me.
Last night was the carnival at Crest drive. Sam ran off with his friends, Jamie manned one of the games, and Emma and I ran around winning prizes. She didn't do the crazy hair thing like years past, but did partake in the traditional squirt gun fight.
Jamie's taking the kids strawberry picking today. Hopefully that means we can do some jam making over the weekend. I also have plans to get more drywall for the shed and a ton of other things, so we'll see how ambitious I end up.
To top it off, tonight is pizza and Mythbusters. Jamie's off to have dinner with Angie's, so I'll have to make due with cramming on a tiny couch the kids, watching things blow up.

The week is halfway over, strangely enough. Yesterday the pollen count was the highest it has been in years, according to the paper. I was actually sniffling at work, which is unheard of.
The kids helped with the shed after work this week. I use the term loosely, as it typically involved sanding or puttying until the task became boring. Still, it's nice to build something tangible after my day job creating imaginary things. Hopefully this weekend we can pick up the rest of the drywall and start getting it up.

In installations, day one of trip involved getting up at 2:00 am, inherently a bad omen. Nonetheless, sleepdriving is possible, and Yayoe and I made it onto our plane just fine. We weren't so lucky at JFK, where we missed our connecting flight, and our next flight was delayed. Nonetheless, both the Avis folks in Pittsburgh were open late, and the hotel I booked in Meadville was most accomadating when I rolled in about a quarter to four. Pennsylvania was at its springtime best, lush and green.

 Happy summer everyone! Isa finished school up on May 29th, and we've been going full seed since then! The one thing Isa wanted to do was dye her hair. We told her that if her grades remained good it was fine with us. Well, with an honor roll and citizanship award under her belt, she now has hot pink streaks. I'll post pics soon.
We also had a nice weekend with Alex and Carolyn who drove over and stayed near Santa Fe. Now, Isa really wants to go visit and learn to play golf.
We're working away at getting our house loan finished down here. But, the process seems to keep going slow. It will be nice just to get started!
England is fast approaching, and I need to catch up with Mom and Adam on all the plans. Robbie is hoping to sneak away for a day to visit an old professor of ours from SOU.

I'm laying in bed next to Emma, the parent for the morning. I have my cute little laptop perched precariously on my lap as I try to type on the little keyboard with my massive fingers.
Yesterday went pretty well, though Emma was under the weather the whole day. We had a stray dog wander into our yard. After trying the Lassie trick of tying on a leash and saying "go home", we were led around the block to no avail. Eventually we called animal services, which picked up the dog, and later the owners came by and I put them in touch. The dog's name was Honey, it turns out.
I managed a bit of project work, staining 1/4 of the new balcony and putting up some more drywall in the shed. I'll see if I can get the kids to help me some more today.
Chase came by and played with Sam for a good long while, too.

 June already. I can't believe that Sam and I will be in England next month. I guess we better figure out where we're staying soon, lest we become tramps and live under bridges.
Sunday was pleasant, with Sam and I working on the shed. I insulated about half of the inside and put up a couple sheets of drywall. The drywall was taking awhile, as I picked the most challenging part of the shed to do first. With Jamie out this upcoming weekend, I may not be able to finish for awhile, but hopefully I can get some more and wrap things up.
The balcony is basically finished, waiting for us to stain it and paint the side of the house where the old balcony was attached. Last night in the middle of the thunderstorm, I stood out on it and watched the rain pour down and the lightning light up the sky.

 Before they had such technology, Adam did all the voice-overs of Monkey Island for Seraph and me. It was magical game for all of us.
I had a great first day at my internship. Being in an important office is nice, but being with nice people is more important. At five I walked to the North End with my friend Carly, where we ate Italian on a rooftop and bought pastries on the way to the commuter rail. Now I'm home in my pajamas, eating a woopie pie and feeling glad that being grown up is so decadent and fun.
Oh, and Greg and I found the perfect apartment in Grafton, with a landlord who thinks we're pretty perfect, too. The packing process has begun!

 Since his recent conversion to the slow food movement, Greg and I have decided to source food locally this summer. The growing season is, unfortunately, a bit shorter than that of the lush Pacific Northwest, so I'm planning some big canning projects. My birthday request, including canoeing and hiking, is a pick-your-own berry adventure. Hopefully we'll figure out how to make strawberry rhubarb pie this summer.
I doubt that eating local food will make up for my new car commute (the apartments we like are all conveniently on the wrong commuter line for me to take them to school), but Greg is pretty militant about making a gesture toward carbon neutrality. My commute may be carbon balanced... whether I like it or not. Watching him strip old windshield wipers of metal to be recycled, I have a feeling I'll be living much more mindfully in a month.
