Five Years of Bliss

June 20, 2017 by Adam in Adam

It's our anniversary today, five years of raising children, fixing leaky plumbing, and occasionally getting a chance for adventures.  I fondly remember asking Joanna to marry me, timing it precisely for the winter solstace in San Francisco so many years ago.  I'm glad she didn't want to go out for ice cream that night, as then I'd have to propose in front of everyone in the store.

Though our lives are rarely boring, having Joanna with me makes the hard parts better and the good parts even more wonderful.

Installer

June 13, 2017 by Adam in Adam

One of the things I've done in my new job is to make an installer for our software.  It started off simple enough, but quickly took up a week or two of my time as I tweaked and added features.  I have the greatest respect for people who make installers these days, as it's pretty challenging work.

Today we did our first install at a client of our product we've been working on.  It worked beautifully.  My favorite quotes were that it was "spooky how easy this was" and "so far this has seemed too fast to believe it's really going to work".

Glad I spent the time making an installer.

Transitions

Dave and I throw a great party.

Well, it wasn't just us - a bunch of people contributed beverages, planning, and presents.  People came from out of town, folks retired from PeaceHealth showed up, and we ate and chatted until it was time to go.  It felt like the end of an era, one of the biggest farewells I've seen at PeaceHealth.  It meant a lot to Dave and I that so many people showed up - a fitting end to over two decades, most of which we spent working next to each other.

Glen and Summer bought us unicorn themed gifts, and we received several cards packed with farewells.  I've vowed to return occasionally, if only to pick up Pam's eggs.  Sam repeatedly declares the inadequacy of store bought eggs.

Joanna took out the last of her things and Emma helped me put together my office in the back yard.  Health Catalyst will pay for office furniture for remote workers, so I'll likely get a new desk and chair.  It's nice to have so many familiar things around me - it'll make it easier to be out there.  I'm excited to start work in earnest.

Shutting Things Down

March 03, 2017 by Adam in Adam

I'm turning things off and shutting things down today, my PC soon to be remaged and used for something new.  My trusty Optiplex 9020 has seen a lot of development over the years.  I shut down my SharePoint development virtual machine for the last time today.  Soon everything on my hard drive will be a series of 0's, waiting to be reborn into something new.

Farewell PeaceHealth

February 06, 2017 by Adam in Adam

I gave notice today.  Tom was gracious and understanding.  I spoke with my team mates afterward - Daniel was somewhat surprised.  I think he felt a little bad luring me away from development only to have me leave that position.  I assured him I've really appreciated working with him and learning a tremendous amount about security these last few months.  I've spent the morning telling a few others, though I need to make the rounds at some point.

I'm going to work at Health Catalyst, going back to web development.  Things started the day I was written up - I had lunch with Glen and he notified a recruiter that day.  I had to scramble to put a resume together and then there was a long period of interviews, making sample code, and delays for the holidays.  I'll be doing full stack Angular and .NET development - all very cutting edge.  I'll be working for an ex-PeaceHealth person and will likely have a fair amount of interactions with some of the six other ex-PeaceHealth web developers.  It's quite comforting.

Still have a lot to sort out and transition, both at work and at home.  I'm pondering moving into the back shed and working out of that space.  It's quiet and isolated and pretty, though I'd want to get another power outlet and good network connectivity.  I have some party planning to arrange, especially as my good buddy Dave Mehl is leaving the same day as I am.

The times they are a changin'.

Moving Into A New Office

January 20, 2017 by Adam in Adam

I moved into an office today, leaving my cubicle of 7 years.  They want the security team to be able to close the door should sensitive things come up.  It's understandable, though I hope I don't become isolated from my coworkers.

The new office is generally nice, and I like the space.  Though Dave is retiring soon, it's still the end of an era.  We've sat next to each other for most of the last couple decades.
