Plaster Mask

November 15, 2013 by Adam in Ben

Berry, Duncan, and I dropped off Sam and Emma last Monday and returned home to do art projects.  I'd mentioned doing plaster masks, and Berry was quiet enthusiastic.  She patiently waited while I slathered Vasoline on her face and applied wet plaster bandages.  I read Sonic to her until they dried and then turned it into a mask that she brought to school.

Half Birthday

Berry had her half birthday yesterday - halfway to being a teenager, she proudly exclaimed.  She ended up with a huge cake and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pinball machine.  Apparently it was Duncan's idea.

Graduation Day

June 13, 2013 by Adam in Ben

We went to Berry's graduation event at the Little French School.  She cheerfully accepted her pin and diploma, then ran off to play on the swing set.  I generally followed the kids around while Joanna networked, trying to drum up business for a possible future career as a freelancer.  I think she got hooked up with some upcoming library fundraising campaign.

It's strange having the last kid go through graduation there.  It's been four years for Emma and two years for Duncan.  Sierra, Emma's old teacher and sometimes babysitter, was leaving the school, headed for California with her family.  Life seems a series of hellos and goodbyes.

Hanging out in Kindergarten

One upside of being laid off is that I no longer feel guilty volunteering at the kids' school. I've tried to make up for my lack of involvement this school year in the last two weeks.

I volunteered for a while last Thursday morning, and captured Berry signing and singing an ABC song with her class.

And then we enjoyed Field Day with lots of jumping, tugging, hopping and generally having fun, followed by lunch and a popsicle.

Spoiler Alert: We Set Her Hair On Fire

April 14, 2013 by Adam in Ben

It was quite the birthday party for Berry yesterday.  We've all been sick, but we managed to go all-out on the Wizard 101 themed decorations.  There were Harry Potter glasses, a Wizard 101 cake, and a Unicorn-themed Happy Birthday sign.  The horde of children arrived, along with a few adults who stayed.  We gave the adults wine, chocolate covered strawberries, and board game recommendations.  The kids got pinata bashing, playing in the backyard, and lots of cake and ice cream.

Berry had a good time overall, despite the fact that the relighting candles ended up being a fire hazard that set her hair briefly ablaze.  Fortunately no one had time to be terrified, as one of the dads had lighting-like reflexes and put it out immediately.

It's her actual birthday today, and we'll have a smaller gift exchange with just the family.  I think Berry is happy to finally be six, as she's seemed like a big kid for some time now.
