Tromping Through the Wasteland
December 02, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
I'm continuing to enjoy Fallout 4, despite the occasional "RPG lite" aspects. Bethesda games tend to be a little low on meaningful choices and full of the Disneyland joy of exploration and meeting interesting characters in the wasteland.
I'm busy building up my settlements and getting into trouble with the high-tech remnants of civilization. No idea how far along into the game I am exactly, but it feels like I've done quite a bit. Occasionally I have to stop and take in the ambiance, though. This view of a post-apocalyptic Boston sure was pretty.

Fallout and Planets
November 15, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
Fallout 4 arrived last week. I took the day off to celebrate. While it's a very familiar experience, it's been compelling. There are some new pieces that work really well, though they took some getting used to. Building settlements is new - making farms and running power lines around. Apparently you can make some elaborate machines with a bit of work.
It's full of rewarding set pieces - emerging from the Vault to hear The Wanderer broadcast over the radio, getting your PIPBoy 3000, and battling a Deathclaw in power armor. Good times.
Sam and I have been also playing Space Engineers lately, as they just added planets to the game. I spent twenty minutes yesterday trying to find his crashed lander in my still operating one, then we set up an arctic base and began drilling for ore. Eventually we built a little buggy, which Sam immediately flipped after putting a couple wheels on backwards. We rigged up a piston system to tilt it up and then a thruster to flip it completely over. He had a great time.

Planetary Annihilation
September 08, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
Long ago I kickstarted a game that was loosely planned as a fairly standard RTS, but based on several planets in a solar system. It was okay when I played it a year or two ago. Sam and I played for a little and then put it away for a long while. Lately they came out with a new version that has twice as much content and is considerably well polished. I played a couple games with Sam, losing the first and winning due to an AI killing him early in the game.
Single player is actually not too bad either, though the AI I've been fighting isn't particularly aggressive. Mostly I enjoy playing with the really big things you can build. I'm a fan of nuclear missiles, though I've yet to work up to building the asteroid-moving rockets that let you completely obliterate a planet by smashing it to pieces.

I Am Batman
July 07, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
I've been playing the latest batman game, Arkham Knight. There were some serious performance issues, to the point where they stopped selling the PC version after a couple days. Fortunately it plays fine for me on my super-speedy computer. It's actually quite fun, like the previous games, and I'm busy flying, fighting, and puzzle solving my way around the city.
I had a slightly amusing situation last night where I ran into a guy at the police station, glowing green like the Riddler's henchmen. Though the GUI didn't say anything, I used my Interrogate move and ended up throwing him into jail. I guess it's not easy being green.

Witcher 3 & Babies
June 10, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
Fortunately Sam never reads my blog, as there are definitely spoilers below. I continue to have fun playing Witcher 3. In my latest adventures I defeat a couple monsters, toss an (illusory) baby in an oven to break a curse, and dispel a wish made by a djinn. The last one made a somewhat devious sorceress sad, but that's what happens when you mess with dark magic.

Still Witchy
June 03, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
I continue to play Witcher 3 somewhat obsessively. Yesterday I romanced a sorceress, went to a masquerade ball, won a card game, killed a vampire, escaped through the sewers, and confessed my undying love.
There were a few amusing bugs, such as when my NPC companion got stuck in a doorway, or when she perpetually got attacked by rats. Still, it's one of my favorite games in a long while.

Now With More Witchiness
June 02, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
Sam and I both continue to play Witcher 3, and it continues to be excellent. The depth of the game and the choices you have to make are fairly incredible. In this particular instance, I was supposed to have my ally get tortured while I bartered with the villain. I decided I was having none of that and we torched the place.

Witcher 3
May 20, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
Both Sam and I picked up Witcher 3 on the release date. So far, it's a pretty great game, with murky morality and interesting story lines. I've been riding my trusty horse around, getting into trouble.
Sam is far past me, of course. He'll ask what quest I'm on, and we speak in vague terms so as not to spoil the other.

Grand Theft Auto
May 03, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
The latest Grand Theft Auto game came out for PC recently. It has the highest Metacritic score of any PC game at the moment, and I understand why. The virtual world is full of interesting places and things to do - I've played golf, gone hunting, ridden a Ferris wheel, bought property, played the stock market, and so much more. Then there's the actual storyline, which is pretty good, despite the fact that all the main characters are pretty bad people.
Occasionally I lose myself, driving on the rainy roads listening to the radio, content to just take in the ambiance of the faux-California streets.
Of course, then there's the fun in doing incredibly ridiculous things. I decided to find some jumps and give it a try. I don't think this is one of the 50 official jumps in the game, but that didn't stop me trying to make one of those cool jump videos.

Pillars of Eternity & Metal Gear Solid
April 08, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
I'm very slowly working through a glut of games. I go through them slowly these days, but they continue to be a fun bright point in my array of hobbies.
I'm towards the end of a Portal-like puzzler called The Talos Principle. It's fun, and has an interesting story, but I put it on hold to play Pillars of Eternity. It's an homage to the old Baldur's Gate games of 16 years ago, done with all the modern bells and whistles and a great non-D&D world to learn about and explore. I've sunk in a ton of hours and continue to have fun with it.
Sam's been working on his PS3 games he recently picked up, including having me go through Metal Gear Solid. I'm slowly getting okay at it, but am only halfway through. I may have to go bug him to let me play more tonight, as I'm curious as to how it turns out.

Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance
March 14, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
Sam talked me into buying Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance. It's a fairly standard fighting game, with an over-the-top story. At the moment, I'm trying to retrieve the brains of children being turned into cyborg soldiers. Every time they say "brains", I want to rub my hands together and cackle.
I felt completely incompetent playing at the beginning, but Sam gave me pointers and it's become pretty fun. Weirdly, a key gameplay element is cutting your enemies in half and ripping out their cyborg spines for energy. I've gotten rather good at it.

Dragon Age: Inquisition
January 02, 2015 by Adam in Adam's Games
I've been playing the latest Dragon Age game from Bioware. They're known for epic RPGs, and this is certainly one of them. There are flaws, sure - lots of "collect x" quests that are a kind of silly. Where it excels is the scope of the thing - huge, sweeping landscapes to wander around and explore. There's just so much to do in it that I can't stop playing.
