SadnessTue, Jan 12, 2021 7:23 PM by Seraph in Cortez

Our bunny Luna died this morning. We could tell she was sick when we got up this morning, but it progressed quickly. It's been tough for all of us. Even the dogs were uneasy all day. Isa and I filled a box with cedar, and Robbie and I burried her under an apple tree on the farm.

I'm really sorry. Luna was sweet and very soft.

Oh no! Sorry, Seraph.
NM UpdatesFri, Mar 13, 2020 10:58 AM by Seraph in Cortez

I'm sitting in bed wide awake at 3:45am, so I thought I should post an update and say hello. We have been on our spring break this week with lots of yard work, paperwork, and errands. Alex and Anne flew in last night, and we'll get to visit with them today and tomorrow.

New Mexico has been very proactive on the COVID19 front. There have been 6 positive cases in the state state (please remember we have a very small state population), and the governor declared a state of emergency on Wednesday. Shortly after that events around the state started to be canceled, including the high school basketball championships (which trumps all in NM). Yesterday the public education secretary had a conference call with all the school superintendents and told them schools would be closed for three weeks starting next Monday. The extra days will be added to the end of the school year.

That announcement really brought it home for Robbie and I. I'm not yet sure how my feelings are about it. Part of me is happy to have more time in the garden, and part of me is worried sick for my students, many of whom rely on free breakfast, and lunch, and the safety and love from school. Our district will be sending us more information today, so I'm hoping that will settle my mind.

Isa has decided to postpone her trip to Eugene for now. She's sad not to get to see everyone, but it didn't feel like the responsible thing to do right now. Alex and Anne have also canceled their international business travel for next week, which makes us happy.

I recommend lots of reading, puzzles, and spring gardening to get us all through. Help your neighbors when possible and don't hoard toilet paper.

We'll miss Isa very much, but I'm glad you're all doing okay and hunkering down. Schools just closed in Oregon until April 1st, so we're all making plans as well.
Mid-winter updatesThu, Jan 31, 2019 3:37 AM by Seraph in Cortez

Just a couple of updates on the Cortez household. Isabell has enrolled at Fort Lewis College in Colorado next fall. A friend of hers is also going and they are hoping to be dorm mates. Her senior year is dwindling away, and she's added a job with the school's history department a few days each week.

Robbie's year has been busy. His class has finished their winter testing and he's getting a new student tomorrow. He's been having fun reading a lot of books about Alaska and wants to add a trip to his bucket list.

I head back to work on Friday, and I'm already dreading the endless paperwork to catch up on. I am looking forward to hugs from all my students. I also had the first of two basal cell carcinomas removed today. The other surgery will be next week. This first one is at my hairline and I'm not allowed to wash my hair for a 2 days. I hope the world is ready for crazy hair days! The second one is right under my eye. I think I'll wear a pirate eye patch for a few days so my students chalk it up to the usual Mrs. Cortez looney behavior, instead of my slow morph into Frankinstein.

We've had a real winter this year and stay warm under the piles of our furry animals (cats, dogs, and now a rabbit). I'm definitely looking forward to spring!

I'd vote for an eye patch! Hope all goes well, Seraph. We all love you.
Spring TimeSun, Apr 8, 2018 6:23 PM by Seraph in Cortez

Spring winds swept through Chimayo last night, picking up the large umbrella from our back patio and carrying it over our house! Unfortunately, it landed on my car and cracked my windsheild pretty badly. Fortunately, it didn't hit anything else, or do any other damage (and the umbrella is alright too!). I guess this is what we get for wishing for a little spring time weather to come our way!

Good grief! We had a sympathy windstorm here, too!

I took Duncan and Emma out into our little windstorm yesterday, bundling them up in rain gear. It was fun, and my enthusiasm kept them going long enough to get them a little exercise. Nothing as exciting as your adventures.
Home PhoneMon, Mar 19, 2018 12:53 AM by Seraph in Cortez

Hello all! Our house phone is down right now and won't be fixed until later this week (we hope). If you need to reach us, try our cellphones, but please be patient as we don't have service in our house (darn those 21" thick walls!).

Hugs all around!!

20th AnniversarySun, Oct 22, 2017 4:31 PM by Seraph in Cortez

Last weekend Robbie and I had a small gathering of friends for our anniversary out at Vivac Winery.  It ended up being a beautiful NM afternoon, and we were lucky enough to have an old minister of ours come out and do a short "recommittment" ceremony.

I'll post pictureses if I can figure out how!

Adam Mon, Oct 23, 2017 4:24 PM
Awesome! Feel free to email me photos and I'll post them too (or you could try clicking the icon of mountains and pick your picture)

Happy Birthday Seraph!Thu, Nov 10, 2016 2:38 PM by Adam in Cortez

Happy birthday sweet sister.  I still remember when Jenny and I pushed you around in your "moon buggy" all those years ago.  I suppose you've grown up since then, but that's how I still think of you.

Dad was looking at Emma with all her curly blond hair and remarking how much she looks like you when you were a kid.  She has the same kind disposition too, which I'm ever grateful for.

Mom Thu, Nov 10, 2016 5:16 PM
Seraph, you really were a cute kid. It's amazing how much Emma looks like you.

Happy birthday Mom! I'm hoping the fact that I can't reach you on the phone means that you're out partying it up in style!
